How to use server room air conditioning,  The best way to use server room air conditioning

Orion air conditioning has completed the installation of a replacement server room air conditioning system for IQ Unity, Bedford Technology Park, Bedfordshire, UK. The existing Fujitsu air conditioning wall mounted air conditioning units were reaching a critically bad condition with one having a failed compressor, it was initially installed in 1998 !. Fujitsu air Conditioning is renowned for its long reliable life and are ideal for server rooms and coms rooms were a failure can mean the complete shutdown of important parts of a business. The old Fujitsu air conditioning units were running on R22 refrigerant which is now banned for use in the UK and the EU since January 2015. The new units are energy efficient inverter air conditioning systems which have high COP's and modulated inverter DC compressor which can save up to 40% on server room air conditioning that will run 24 hours / 7 days a week.

What air conditioning unit was installed in IQ Unity's server room:

2 x  Fujitsu Air conditioning ASYG24LFCC (7.1Kw / 24000Btu) Wall Heat pump Inverter Air Conditioning units were installed which provided enough cooling for the 50 meter squared area in the server room. These units have an amazing COP (3.61 initial electrical input) which means that every 1000w of electrical energy going in produces 3610 watts of cooling power.

Server room air conditioning efficiency and CO2 emissions:

This Fujitsu air conditioning systems took around 60 minutes to fully cool the server room from 30DegC to 19 DegC and once the server room had cooled to set temperature the outdoor inverter units slowed down because the temperature had been reached, therefore just pumping small amounts of cooling in to maintain the server room temperature. This is why inverter air conditioning is so efficient at cooling server rooms, because a server’s heat load is constantly changing due to use the inverter effectively matches the heat load by speeding up or slowing down the compressor. Where the old fixed speed air conditioning models were either on or off according to the thermostat, they often would draw a huge in-surge current of electricity which costs money and requires a huge chunk of a buildings electrical fuse rating which maybe only 80Amps single phase.

Summery:

Server room equipment efficiency: 85%

Total estimated power of servers: 6000 Watts

Total heat loss: 900 Watts@85%

Room heat load in Square Meters: 4800 Watts

Total Heat Load: 5700 Watts

Key points to think about when getting air conditioning for server rooms:

Inverter air conditioning will save energy. Cheap air conditioning units do not work in cold weather because they do not have a outside fan speed controller (low ambient kit), once the ambient falls below 0 DegC outside they fail to cool. Use a established brand so if a part fails on you server room air conditioning system you are not waiting 8 weeks for the spare part. It is worth having two server room air conditioning systems or add twice the estimated heat load because if one air conditioning unit fails you still have some cooling back up. If your server room is temporary (ie short term lease on building) or has building restrictions then portable air conditioning maybe your only option. Always use auto-restart units for server room air conditioning units as power failures can shut budget air conditioning down. We advice never to use over cabinet style air conditioning, these units tend to leak water which if directly over the server rack will drip water in to the top.

Establishing the Heat Load Of Your Server Room:

To establish the heat load of you servers add up all the power supplies of the server’s rack and assume a 15% loss to heat due to efficiency of the power supplies.

Example:

If you have 10 racks within a cabinet with say a 400-watt power supply requirement for each, the total watts required will be 4000 watts of electrical supply. Assuming the 15% efficiency loss on each racks the heat load will be 600 watts.

Establishing the Server Rooms Basic Heat Load:

Work on a average watts per/Msq of 125watts, so if your server room is 5 x 5 meters (25Msq) you will require a air conditioning unit as close to 3.125 kW.

Advised manufactures for server room air conditioning: Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu and Lg.
